CATEGORIES // Arts | Entertainment Artist Kylie 'Hoysie' Hoy talks to Cherrie about the inspiration behind creating her own gallery, the HOY-HUB, which officially opens to the public in October. What's your background as an artist? I feel like I've been drawing since I was a kid. Cheeky doodles were my forte. Academically though, I graduated with a BA in Visual Art at Southern Cross University back in '92, majoring in print-making, but have always been drawn to painting because of its immediacy. I love print-making but the long process always took the fun out of it. I then moved to NYC for six years where I painted, exhibited, designed t-shirts, and was a designer for a boutique greeting card company as well as spending years as the Master Painter for a quite famous NYC pop artist. Moving back to Sydney I have continued painting and designing t-shirts which leads us now to HOY-HUB Gallery. What inspires your work? Everything and anything does. It really comes down to what catches my eye at the time and then I usually translate this into some sort of humorous 'Hoysie' outlook. Humour is a biggy. I always see the fun in the mundane. People, places, old advertising especially from the 50's, heroes, rock gods, iconic figures, popular culture, words-sayings, slogans and cowboys all get a look. Can you tell us a bit about the show, 'Just Admiring The View'? 'Just Admiring The View' is a collection of paintings I have done over the last year. For me, it is all about seeing simultaneously the beauty and humour in things. Be it people, ideas or objects. You're opening HOY-HUB Gallery this month, what was behind your decision to open a gallery? I'm turning 40 in October and it's something I've always dreamt of doing and it was like 'if I don't do it now, when am I going to do it?' Enter the HOY-HUB. I wanted to solely focus on my art full time and opening HOY-HUB Gallery gives me the opportunity to do something I love day in day out. HOY-HUB for me is a place where I have total control of my art-work and exhibitions, as well as giving the opportunity for other brilliant artists to showcase their work. It really is the best feeling to wake up each and every morning knowing you're doing something you love, crave and are meant to be doing. What can we expect to see there? I will be exhibiting my work in this show until December and you will be able to get your hands on my new range of limited edition Hoy designed t-shirts. We are in the throes of the process of hand-picking artists that we are going to exhibit on a monthly basis from January. There are so many talented artists out there that don't have a good space to show in so HOY-HUB would like to support and nurture this. You can also do a spot of shopping in the retail store upstairs featuring my limited edition T's and amazing, unique, clever, creative wares of other local and national artists and designers.
